Two decades have passed since Clint Eastwood's last great performance

Mostly known for playing tough guys in Westerns before the 1970s, Clint Eastwood is one of the best actors turned directors the industry has ever seen. It all began in 1971 when the San Francisco native actor, famous for appearing in high-profile spaghetti Westerns, decided to change his career direction. Clint Eastwood directed and starred in the near-perfect thriller Play Misty for Me. From that moment, producers knew they could trust him with enough creative control to direct his films. Decades later, and after winning an Oscar for Best Director, Eastwood still faced challenges: Million Dollar Baby wasn't an easy film to make.

The 2004 sports drama cemented Hilary Swank's role in Hollywood, delivering arguably her best performance to date. Clint Eastwood, her co-star, producer, and director, also delivered a notable performance. Playing Frankie Dunn, the always-angry but boxing trainer, Eastwood proved in 2004 that beneath his many frowns and gruff voice lay a compelling character. This character could only have been effectively portrayed by a performer like Clint Eastwood.

Million Dollar Baby is one of Clint Eastwood's best non-Western movies. He masterfully directed it, featuring a notable script by Paul Haggis.

Haggis ensures the film transcends the typical underdog sports narrative, focusing on the emotional experience of a loving relationship stemming from spiritual strength rather than mere chemistry between trainer and boxer. The film avoids uplifting sequences of Maggie's overnight success. Instead, it centers on Frankie witnessing a woman whose force was overwhelming both in and out of the ring. Ultimately, he honors her spirit by following her command and pleas.

Clint Eastwood is fantastic as his character. Frankie's demeanor rarely calls for a smile, perfectly fitting the role. The casting is impeccable, with Swank and Freeman delivering award-winning performances. While Eastwood didn't win the Best Actor award, losing to Jamie Foxx in Ray, he did take home the Best Director and Best Picture prizes.

Why is Frankie Dunn one of Clint Eastwood's iconic characters? It's due to Eastwood's sharp understanding of the character's progression into a humble father figure whose greatest mission is to support Maggie.

Eastwood's best scenes show him grappling with the world's madness and injustice, a heavy burden for a man whose trials were shallower than he imagined. Yet, he remained steadfast to support the woman he loved and failed.

One reason for Clint Eastwood's outstanding performance is Hilary Swank's portrayal of Maggie, her best performance to date. Eastwood's performance in Million Dollar Baby is memorable and compelling, but he may be even better as a director. Since the release of Cry Strong in 2021, he has stayed away from the spotlight.

The 94-year-old filmmaker remains active, and his latest, possibly final, film is slated for release later this year or early 2025. Titled Juror No. 2, the film wrapped production in April 2024 and features a cast including Nicolas Hulot, Toni Collette, Kiefer Sutherland, Leslie Bibb, and J.K. Simmons. The official synopsis is as follows: Family man Justin Kemp, while serving as a juror in a high-profile murder trial, finds himself grappling with a serious moral dilemma that could sway the jury's verdict and potentially convict or free the wrong killer.
